Morbid Obesity treatment
Morbid Obesity treatment is generally similar to curing obesity in stages 1 and 2. However, this is a difficult process, and in many cases, people with this condition cannot cope with the problem only through diet, exercise or lifestyle change. They may need to be prescribed the drugs that suppress appetite and reduce the absorption of nutrients in the body, as well as the drugs that normalize hormones and enhance the body’s metabolism. For instance, the drug Orlistat reduces the absorption of fat in the intestine by inhibiting the action of lipase (pancreatic enzyme).
In some situations of severe adiposity, surgery can be recommended. The surgery makes patient’s stomach smaller and sometimes modifies the small intestine. There are 4 main types of such surgeries: gastric banding (the imposition of band at the stomach top), sleeve gastrectomy (resection of the body and fundus of the stomach), gastric bypass (dividing the stomach into 2 parts – smaller one and larger one), biliopancreatic bypass (making the stomach smaller through resection of its part).
Gastric banding is the safest and most noninvasive surgery for the patient among bariatric surgeries. However, it is also the most complex and difficult one especially in arranging the postoperative period. Banding allows a person to achieve a weight loss in the amount of 50-60% of excess body weight.
